ChloraShield™Clear Chlorine Resistant Sealer
DESCRIPTION
FOR INDUSTRIAL USE ONLY. READ PRODUCT DATA & MSDS SHEET CAREFULLY BEFORE USE. Chlora Shield™ is a CLEAR CHLORINE RESISTANT coating that has been uniquely formulated to seal, protect and bring back the WET-LOOK shine to all types of water slide surfaces including plastic, fiberglass and metal that have been damaged by chlorine water, i.e. oxidation, scale build-up, white chlorine haze, etc. It can also be used to rejuvenate any topcoat paint that has been applied on a water slide, fiberglass or metal aquatic play features and fiberglass or aluminum boat hulls. It cannot be used as an Anti-Fouling bottom boat paint. All SlideRenu® brand coatings have outstanding abrasion resistance to body riders and good abrasion resistance to rafts, inner tubes and mats. The coatings can be used on all interior and exterior water slide surfaces. All SlideRenu® coatings are suitable for immersion, have excellent resistance to ultra violet light degradation and provide long-term gloss and color retention to all types of water slide surfaces.
Chlora Shield™ dries to touch in 15 minutes and cures within 24 hours to form a molecular bond with the aquatic surface to be protected. It may be hand applied using a high density foam roller (recommended) or sprayed using conventional airless or air assisted spray equipment or an HVLP gun. The coating can be applied at a temperature as low as 40°F or 5°C.
CHEMICAL DESCRIPTION
Chlora Shield™ contains aromatic hydrocarbons and an acrylic polymer which allows the coating to penetrate deeply into the gel-coat, plastic and metal pores to form a protective seal against oxidation caused by chlorinated water. Chlora Shield™ has a high VOC level of 669/G/L and must be applied with adequate ventilation due to hydrocarbon vapors.
STORAGE
Store Chlora Shield™ in a clean, ambient temperature room between 60-90°F or 15-30°C. Cold products are very viscous and will be difficult to mix and apply. Products shipped during cold months can remain cold for many days even when stored as recommended. Let Chlora Shield™ naturally thaw. DO NOT HEAT as the coating is EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE. This product has a minimum shelf life of one (1) year when stored at 70°F or 20°C in the original sealed container.
SURFACE PREPARATION
Before applying to any water slide surface, it is critical to remove wax, release agents, sun tan and sun screen lotions, hard water mineral deposits, calcium scale build-up, rust stains, mold, mildew and all other surface contaminants with a pressure washer (Hot Water / 3500 PSI recommended) and SlideCare™ cleaning products; SlideSoap™ and SlideDetergent™. For tough to remove surface contaminants and scale, use Calcitrol™. (Refer to the Product Data Sheet for Application Instructions for all SlideCare™ products). The surface should be sanded with 100-300 grit silicon carbide (recommended) sandpaper using an orbital or dual-action sander in order to create a good adhesion profile for any SLIDERENU® coating applied to gel-coat/fiberglass/metal/plastic surfaces. After sanding, rinse thoroughly with DE-IONIZED WATER (recommended) to eliminate microscopic hard water mineral deposits from clinging to the cleaned surface. Let surface dry completely. Wipe area to be coated with a clean lint-free white cloth and MEK solvent. IMPORTANT: If the surface is not void of contaminants, sanded, thoroughly rinsed with DEIONIZED WATER and wiped down with MEK solvent, the coating may not adhere properly.
APPLICATION EQUIPMENT
After the surface has been wiped with MEK solvent, apply Chlora Shield™ using; Cloth – clean white T-Shirt style cotton cloths; Brushes – short natural bristle or foam; Rollers - non-shedding short nap 1/4” max., non-shedding mohair or high density foam (recommended) roller covers with a phenolic core; Pads – ¼” synthetic applicator pads. Replace when brushes, rollers and pads become stiff. Spray Equipment – conventional airless, air assisted or HVLP spray equipment.
MIXING
Chlora Shield™ is a single component CLEAR CHLORINE RESISTANT COATING that requires only occasional manual stirring prior to application.
APPLICATION
For small areas, less than 120 square feet, use Chlora Shield™12 oz. aerosol can. Spray approximately 12” from the surface with smooth, even, overlapping strokes. For larger areas, Chlora Shield™ is available in 1 gallon and 5 gallon containers. Hand-apply using a cloth, brush, roller or pad with 50% overlapping strokes. Back-brush with a foam brush to remove air bubbles caused when using a roller. PROVIDE ADEQUATE VENTILATION when applying Chlora Shield™ and REMOVE ALL SOURCES OF IGNITION OR SPARK. The surface temperature should be 40 ̊F or 4 ̊C – 130 ̊F or 54 ̊C. Humidity will affect the application. DO NOT APPLY WHEN HUMIDITY IS ABOVE 85 ̊. Runs, drips or the entire coating can be removed with lacquer thinner. The coating dries to touch in 15 minutes and reaches a full cure in 24 hours at 70°F or 20°C. For applications requiring multiple coats, allow at least 12 hours of dry time between coats. To re-coat an aging Chlora Shield™ surface, clean thoroughly with SlideCare™ SlideDetergent™, rinse thoroughly with water, allow surface to completely dry, wipe with MEK solvent and re-applying Chlora Shield™. It is not necessary to sand the surface prior to re-coating with Chlora Shield™.
IMPORTANT
Pot life is 2 hours and recoat time is approximately 12 hours at 50% humidity and 77°F or 25°C temperature. Full functional cure is 24 hours before chlorine immersion of the rejuvenated surface can take place. Drying times are dependent upon temperature and humidity conditions. Put lid on container when not in use.
CLEAN-UP
Use Xylene (recommended) Acetone, Mineral Spirits, Lacquer Thinner or MEK to clean up spray equipment. Wash hands with a mild citrus-based soap.
